Around the nebula one can find abandoned technology that is far more advanced than anything humans can currently produce. On most planets with human inhabitants is one or more examples of the most famous Old-Tech; Obelisks. Occasionally on a planet one might find an entire mine constructed by old tech, the machines which dug them still around in varying states of disrepair. More usually, however, mines are in space. Asteroids rinsed of their resources may house such machinery. Possession of such tools makes for easy profit if you can get them working again. All kinds of different technologies can be found and differing amounts of information is known about each. The Old-Tech Foundation is an organisation working to understand it and where it came from. There are many stories and ideas surrounding Old-Tech and it's origins.

Obelisks
These towering structures have facilities to teach. Although what is taught holds true for every obelisk - that is to say, no two contradict one another - not all contain the same amount of information. Indeed, there are subtle differences between them. One thing that remains constant, almost the only thing, is the use of the English language. This small yet crucial detail means the entire nebula is connected by a single common language, even with the evolution of language that comes with the passage of time, almost all communication in the nebula has it's roots in English.
There are few other unifying features across the obelisks although there are many common tendencies. From structural features like the infamous towering obelisk to their equally columness geothermal power generators to features of the teaching method. Very few obelisks will provide all the information they have from go, by different methods certain information is held back until other, simpler concepts are understood.
But some are so drastically different as to have no above ground structures whatsoever, or one unique example of an Obelisk that taught nothing other than mathematics, leading the local population to develop a language completely uninfluenced by English.
An Obelisks, like any Old-Tech, represents a powerful resource and have been the source of as much conflict as they have peace-making. They are treated as religious relics or, when abandoned or broken, sometimes even as salvage.
