In the Nebula, the use of a stasis as a means of extending the lifespan of humans has been integral to its interconnection. With distances between stars at an average of 0.05ly, even with brisk travel, a great deal of waiting is involved. Understandably, this is not merely tedious, but often outright dangerous. Ships, safe as they are, represent a great deal of hazard to waking occupants. Countless lives have been lost to stubbed toes and falls, but perhaps the greatest danger of all is perhaps boredom. Early travellers in slow-moving torch vessels died in their thousands to deadly games of chance, ill-advised dares, and accidents of an intimate and self-inflicted nature. To combat this, stasis technology, an evolving science, was implemented.
Early examples of this did not always go according to plan. Irreparable damage to mental function and memory was a consequence of too-rapid defrosting, and this had far reaching impacts on early colonisation, with generations of great minds being lost, arriving empty and cold. With great loss came great strides; humanity was undeterred, and it is a point of great pride that only a tiny fraction of stasis travellers arrive impaired. Nonetheless, those isolated cases are complex and controversial. Interstellar incorporated being largely responsible for inter-system stasis, their no interference privacy policy has left many confused travellers in the lurch. In this age, most damage done is only to long term memory, and this has led to the well-known incidence of the "lost-person"
Lost in themselves, and more importantly lost in a highly disorientating environment, these people are highly vulnerable. Responding to allegations of deliberate neglect, IntInc has implemented a flat-fee reimbursement programme, equipping lost people with a means to return to a planet, or on board another vessel, both subsequent to a short period of rehabilitation.
You are amongst these lost people, and a broad avenue of opportunity opens before you.
